Writing to Communicate

Even if you follow all the tips we’ve shared this week, a deaf or hard-of-hearing person might still misunderstand you. Don’t stop, just repeat what yourself and continue the conversation. If they are having trouble understanding a certain word or phrase, try using a different word, rephrasing what you said or typing it in your phone or using a pen and paper to supplement your conversation.

Always remember that everyone is different. When you’re in doubt of how best to communicate with someone who is deaf or hard-of-hearing, try asking the person for suggestions to improve communication.
