While every child loves halloween and all the activities included, extra consideration needs to be given to children who are hard of hearing. In order to help ensure their safety this Halloween season, check out these helpful Halloween hearing loss safety tips:

Does your child wear hearing aids? If so, make sure you check your child’s hearing aid to ensure that it is working correctly prior to trick or treating. Bring extra batteries just in case.

Have your child try on their costume on beforehand to ensure that it fits and doesn’t interfere with their hearing aid, or make it difficult to hear or walk.

Avoid using masks and use face paint instead. Some masks cover the ears and make it difficult or impossible to hear and can interfere with your child’s hearing aid.

Even if your child is old enough, make sure they travel in a group on Halloween. If they aren’t old enough to go with friends, make sure you or someone else you trust is trailing close behind to be able to cater to their needs.

Ensure that your child can be seen by adding reflective tape to their clothing or having a costume that lights up also works, such as glow stick bracelets. Be sure that what you or whoever accompanies them wears is identifiable so you can be found easily.
